It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, the series will release two seasons every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.
Learning from Past Breaks
The series anime had a half-year break that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and allow the manga to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although a few summary installments appeared during this season, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.
It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in seasons, with a couple maximum releasing each annually, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
